If you’ve searched for apartments in Japan before, you’ve probably noticed that corner rooms (角部屋 / kadobeya) are usually more expensive and get taken very quickly.
But why are they so popular?
More Privacy

Corner rooms usually share fewer walls with neighbors, which means less noise from both sides. In Japan, where apartment walls can sometimes be thin, this makes a huge difference.
Better Natural Light

Most corner units have extra windows compared to middle units. This allows more sunlight and better airflow throughout the apartment — something many renters care about in Japan’s humid summers.
Better Ventilation

Having windows on multiple sides helps air circulate better, reducing humidity, mold, and condensation problems.
Less Noise From Hallways

Middle units are often directly exposed to people walking past their front door all day. Corner rooms usually feel quieter and more private.
They Feel Bigger

Even when the actual size is the same, extra windows and better room layouts can make a corner apartment feel much more open.
Are They Always Worth It?
Not always.
Corner rooms can sometimes get colder in winter or hotter in summer because they’re exposed on more sides. Depending on the building quality, utility bills may be slightly higher too.
Still, for many renters in Japan, the extra comfort and privacy are worth paying a little more each month.
