Living in Okusawa

When people ask us where to live in Tokyo, we usually hear the usual names: Shibuya, Nakameguro, Shimokitazawa. But if you're looking for somewhere quieter, greener, and still incredibly convenient, we always suggest taking a look at Okusawa. Located in Setagaya Ward and served by the Tokyu Meguro Line, Okusawa Station is one of those rare spots in Tokyo that feels like a true neighborhood. It’s calm, refined, and just far enough off the beaten path to feel special without being remote.

A Calm, Residential Feel

One of the first things you’ll notice about Okusawa is the atmosphere. No giant commercial buildings, no flashy billboards. Just leafy streets, low-rise homes, and a pace of life that feels more relaxed than central Tokyo. It’s the kind of place where you hear birds in the morning and bump into the same friendly neighbors on your walk to the station.

Quick Access to the City

Even though Okusawa feels quiet, it’s surprisingly well connected. Hop on the Meguro Line and you’re in Meguro in under 10 minutes. From there, it’s easy to transfer to the JR Yamanote Line or Tokyo Metro lines, making commutes to places like Shinagawa, Shibuya, or Marunouchi a breeze.

It’s also walking or cycling distance from lively areas like Jiyugaoka and Denenchofu, both known for their cafes, shops, and upscale residential vibe.

Local Shops and a Real Sense of Community

What really sets Okusawa apart is the sense of community. The station area has a lovely little shopping street with bakeries, florists, coffee shops, and locally-run restaurants. It’s the kind of place where the barista remembers your order and where you’ll probably end up chatting with your neighbors over a weekend croissant.

There are also seasonal festivals and local events that give the neighborhood a tight-knit, welcoming feel. Great for families or anyone looking to put down roots.

Great for Families

Setagaya is known across Tokyo for being family-friendly, and Okusawa is no exception. The area is clean, safe, and has access to great schools and parks. Tamagawa River and Kinuta Park are nearby for outdoor activities, and the quieter streets are ideal for kids to walk or bike safely.

Real Estate in Okusawa

Real estate in Okusawa tends to be more residential. Think single-family homes, small apartments, and boutique low-rise condos. Prices here reflect the quality of life, but there are still some hidden gems, especially if you’re open to renovations or long-term investment.
