Even in Japan, where quiet living is the norm, noise can sometimes be a problem. Thin walls, small apartments, and different lifestyles mean that even normal activities can bother your neighbors. Here’s how to handle it without stress.
Understand the Culture
Most apartments expect quiet hours from around 10 p.m. to 7 a.m. Common issues include:
Loud TV or music
Heavy footsteps or slamming doors
Pets barking or kids running indoors
Even small sounds can be noticed, so it helps to be mindful.

Stay Calm and Observe
Before reacting, see if it’s a one-time issue or a regular problem. Keep track of the time and frequency of the noise — this will help if you need to report it.

Go Through the Right Channels
Direct confrontation isn’t usually recommended in Japan. Instead:
Contact the building management (管理会社) or
Ask your real estate agent to handle it
They can send a polite reminder to the tenant, which usually solves the problem quickly.

If You Get a Complaint
Noise complaints happen to everyone. If you get one:
Apologize politely
Check the cause (furniture, flooring, or volume)
Take small measures — add a rug, move furniture, or lower volume at night

Extra Tips

Rugs and cushions can reduce sound
Keep furniture away from shared walls
Close windows when making noise
Earplugs or white-noise machines help if needed
